Biology / Unit 10: Human Body Systems
10.1 Organization and Homeostasis
Notes
The human body is organized in levels: cells → tissues → organs → organ systems → organism.
- The four main tissue types are epithelial (covers), connective (supports, like bone and blood), muscle (moves) and nervous (signals).
- Homeostasis keeps internal conditions (temperature, blood sugar, water, pH) stable.
- Negative feedback reverses a change to bring the body back to its set point. Example: when you overheat, you sweat; as sweat evaporates, you cool down.
- Positive feedback increases a change until an event is finished. Example: contractions during childbirth.
Practice
When body temperature rises, you sweat, and your temperature drops back to normal. This is an example of:
The response reverses the change, returning the body to its set point.
Which is the correct order from simplest to most complex?
Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs work together in systems.
Blood is classified as which type of tissue?
Blood, bone and cartilage are connective tissues.
