English 12 / Unit 8: College and Career Writing
8.4 Cover Letters
Notes
A cover letter introduces you and explains why you fit a particular position. It adds to your résumé rather than repeating it.
- Format: header, greeting, 3 to 4 short paragraphs, closing, signature.
- Paragraph 1: the position and a strong opening that shows interest. Paragraph 2 to 3: one or two relevant experiences and skills, with evidence and a link to the employer's needs. Final paragraph: thank the reader and state next steps.
- Tailor each letter to the organization. Address a person if possible ("Dear Ms. Alvarez").
- Keep it to one page, formal but natural. Proofread.
