English 9 / Unit 8: Writing Essays
8.5 Using Evidence and Quotations
Notes
Quotations should be integrated, never dropped in alone.
- Use the ICE method: Introduce the quote, Cite it, Explain it.
- Signal phrases: According to..., The author states..., As Juliet explains...
- Blend short quotes into your own sentence: The narrator calls the town "a place where dreams went to nap."
- Use an ellipsis (...) to show omitted words and brackets [ ] to add or change words for clarity.
- Paraphrase puts an idea in your own words; it still needs a citation.
