French 1 / Unit 3: Nouns, Articles and Adjectives
3.6 Placement of Adjectives
Notes
Most adjectives go after the noun: un livre intéressant, une voiture rouge.
- Colors, nationalities and shapes always follow the noun: un chat noir, une fille française.
- A short group of common adjectives go before the noun. Remember BAGS: Beauty (beau, joli), Age (jeune, vieux, nouveau), Goodness (bon, mauvais), Size (grand, petit, gros).
- Examples: une petite maison, un bon livre, un jeune garçon.
- Both can occur: un petit chat noir, une grande voiture bleue.
- beau, nouveau, vieux change before a masculine vowel noun: un bel homme, un nouvel ami, un vieil arbre.
