French 2 / Unit 4: The Imparfait
4.1 Forming the Imparfait
Notes
The imparfait (imperfect) is a past tense. To form it, take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add the imparfait endings.
| Subject | Ending | parler (parl-) | finir (finiss-) | prendre (pren-) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| je | -ais | parlais | finissais | prenais |
| tu | -ais | parlais | finissais | prenais |
| il/elle/on | -ait | parlait | finissait | prenait |
| nous | -ions | parlions | finissions | prenions |
| vous | -iez | parliez | finissiez | preniez |
| ils/elles | -aient | parlaient | finissaient | prenaient |
- Examples: nous avons → av- → j'avais; nous faisons → fais- → il faisait; nous allons → all- → elles allaient.
- The je, tu, il and ils forms sound the same: parlais, parlait, parlaient.
