French 2 / Unit 5: Passé Composé vs Imparfait
5.4 Telling a Story
Notes
A good story combines both tenses: the imparfait sets the scene; the passé composé gives the events.
- Scene: C'était un samedi. Il faisait beau. J'étais seul à la maison.
- Events: J'ai entendu un bruit. J'ai ouvert la porte. Un chien est entré.
- Sequence words: d'abord, ensuite, puis, alors, soudain, enfin, finalement.
- Example: Il faisait nuit et il pleuvait. Soudain, j'ai entendu un cri. J'ai couru dehors.
