Health / Unit 5: Relationships and Communication
5.2 Communication Skills
Notes
Good communication is a skill you can practice. It includes speaking clearly and listening well.
- Active listening: face the person, make eye contact, avoid interrupting, and repeat back what you heard ("So you are saying...").
- "I" statements share feelings without blaming: "I feel left out when plans are made without me" instead of "You always ignore me."
- Nonverbal communication, such as tone, facial expression and posture, often says more than words.
- Be clear, calm and respectful, and choose a good time to talk.
- Texting lacks tone, so messages can be misunderstood. For serious topics, talk in person or by voice.
