5.4 Conflict Resolution

3 practice questionsNot yet reviewed

Notes

Conflict is a disagreement between people. It is normal, and handled well it can strengthen relationships.

  • Ways people respond: avoid, give in, fight, or solve the problem together. Problem-solving is usually best.
  • Steps: 1. cool down; 2. each person explains their view without interrupting; 3. use "I" statements; 4. brainstorm solutions; 5. choose a solution you both accept (compromise); 6. follow up.
  • Compromise means each side gives up something to reach an agreement.
  • A mediator, such as a counselor or teacher, is a neutral person who helps both sides.
  • Walk away if things become unsafe. Violence is never a solution.
  • Example: Two siblings want the same screen at the same time. They agree to take turns each hour.
