Notes
Nutrients and balance
- The six nutrient types are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and water. Carbohydrates are the main energy source, protein builds and repairs tissue, and the body needs some fat.
- MyPlate groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods and dairy. Fill about half the plate with fruits and vegetables and choose whole grains often.
- Variety and regular meals support energy and focus. Listen to hunger and fullness cues.
Labels, hydration and safety
- Nutrition Facts: check serving size first. 5% DV or less is low and 20% DV or more is high. Look for more fiber and calcium and less added sugar, sodium and saturated fat.
- Water is the best everyday drink. Signs of dehydration include thirst, headache and dark urine.
- Food safety: clean, separate, cook, chill.
