Spanish 1 / Unit 7: Family and Possessives
7.3 Possessive Adjectives
Notes
Possessive adjectives show who owns something. They agree with the thing owned, not the owner.
| Owner | Singular thing | Plural things |
|---|---|---|
| yo | mi | mis |
| tú | tu | tus |
| él / ella / usted | su | sus |
| nosotros/as | nuestro / nuestra | nuestros / nuestras |
| vosotros/as | vuestro / vuestra | vuestros / vuestras |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | su | sus |
- tu (your) has no accent; tú (you) does.
- Only nuestro and vuestro change for gender: nuestra casa, nuestros primos.
- su can mean his, her, its, your (formal) or their; context makes it clear.
- Example: Mis tías viven en Texas. Su casa es grande.
Practice
Complete: "___ hermanos son muy graciosos." (my)
Hermanos is plural, so mis.
Complete: "Nosotros visitamos a ___ abuela los domingos."
Abuela is feminine singular: nuestra.
In "Ana y Luis tienen un perro. Su perro es negro," what does "su" mean?
The owners are Ana and Luis, so su means "their."
