3.5 Stem-Changing -ir Verbs in the Preterite
Notes
-ir verbs that change stems in the present also change in the preterite, but only in the él / ella / usted and ellos / ellas / ustedes forms: e → i and o → u.

- Other examples: servir (sirvió), seguir (siguió), preferir (prefirió), sentir (sintió), divertirse (se divirtió), morir (murió).
- -ar and -er verbs do not have this change in the preterite.

Mi hermano ___ (pedir) una pizza.
In the él form, e changes to i: pidió.
Ellos ___ (dormir) en el sofá.
In the ellos form, o changes to u.
Nosotros ___ (servir) la cena a las ocho.
The nosotros form does not change its stem in the preterite.
