Spanish 2 / Unit 5: Preterite vs Imperfect
5.5 Telling a Story
Notes
Stories use both tenses. The imperfect sets the scene and the preterite moves the plot forward.
- Scene: Era una noche oscura. Hacía frío.
- Events: De repente, oí un ruido. Abrí la puerta y vi un gato.
- Fairy tales start with Había una vez... (Once upon a time...).
- Example: Había una vez una niña que vivía en el bosque. Un día encontró un mapa.
