Spanish 3 / Unit 1: Review of Past Tenses
1.2 Irregular Preterites
Notes
Many common verbs have an irregular stem and take special endings without accents: -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron.
| Infinitive | Stem | yo form |
|---|---|---|
| tener | tuv- | tuve |
| estar | estuv- | estuve |
| poder | pud- | pude |
| poner | pus- | puse |
| saber | sup- | supe |
| venir | vin- | vine |
| hacer | hic- | hice (él: hizo) |
| querer | quis- | quise |
| decir | dij- | dije (ellos: dijeron) |
| traer | traj- | traje (ellos: trajeron) |
- Ser and ir share the same forms: fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron. Dar and ver use -er/-ir endings without accents: di, diste, dio; vi, viste, vio.
- Verbs with a j in the stem use -eron, not -ieron.
Practice
Nosotros ___ (venir) a la fiesta muy temprano.
Venir has the irregular stem vin- plus -imos.
Los estudiantes me ___ (traer) flores el último día de clase.
Stems ending in j take -eron instead of -ieron.
"Fue a la biblioteca." ¿De qué verbo viene "fue" en esta frase?
The phrase "a la biblioteca" shows direction, so fue is from ir (he went). Ser and ir have identical preterite forms.
