Spanish 3 / Unit 1: Review of Past Tenses
1.3 The Imperfect Tense
Notes
The imperfect describes past actions without a clear beginning or end: habits, descriptions and ongoing events.
| Subject | -ar (hablar) | -er / -ir (comer) |
|---|---|---|
| yo | hablaba | comía |
| tú | hablabas | comías |
| él / ella | hablaba | comía |
| nosotros | hablábamos | comíamos |
| ellos | hablaban | comían |
- Only three verbs are irregular: ser (era, eras, era, éramos, eran), ir (iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, iban) and ver (veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veían).
- Note the accents: the nosotros form of -ar verbs (hablábamos) and all -er/-ir forms (comía).
- Stem-changing verbs do not change in the imperfect: Yo dormía (not duermía).
- Worked example: De niña, yo iba a la playa todos los veranos.
Practice
Cuando yo era niño, ___ (ir) al parque cada domingo.
Ir is irregular in the imperfect: iba. The habitual action "cada domingo" calls for the imperfect.
Nosotros ___ (ser) muy buenos amigos en la escuela primaria.
The imperfect of ser for nosotros is éramos, with a written accent.
¿Qué verbo tiene una forma regular en el imperfecto?
Tener is regular in the imperfect (tenía). Only ser, ir and ver are irregular.
