Spanish 3 / Unit 1: Review of Past Tenses
1.4 Preterite or Imperfect?
Notes
Both tenses talk about the past, but they show different views of it.
| Use the preterite for... | Use the imperfect for... |
|---|---|
| completed actions: Comí pizza. | habits: Comía pizza los viernes. |
| a sequence of events: Llegué, saludé y me senté. | descriptions and background: Hacía sol. |
| actions with a stated start or end or number of times: Estudié dos horas. | age, time and feelings: Tenía diez años. Eran las tres. |
| a change or reaction: Tuve miedo cuando oí el ruido. | ongoing actions: Mi madre cocinaba. |
- Clue words for the imperfect: siempre, todos los días, a menudo, mientras, de niño.
- Clue words for the preterite: ayer, anoche, una vez, de repente, el año pasado.
Practice
Cuando yo ___ (tener) cinco años, vivíamos en Chile.
Age in the past uses the imperfect.
El verano pasado mi familia ___ (viajar) a Perú.
"El verano pasado" signals a completed event, so the preterite is used.
¿Cuál de estas oraciones describe un hábito en el pasado?
"Todos los veranos" shows a repeated action, so the imperfect (íbamos) fits. The others are single events.
