Spanish 3 / Unit 1: Review of Past Tenses
1.6 Telling a Story in the Past
Notes
Good narration combines both tenses: the imperfect sets the scene and the preterite moves the plot forward.
- Setting: Era una noche oscura. Hacía frío y llovía. (imperfect)
(imperfect for the ongoing action, preterite for the interruption)
- Two ongoing actions at once: Mientras yo estudiaba, mi hermano jugaba. (both imperfect)
(all preterite)
- Useful words: de repente (suddenly), entonces (then), mientras (while), cuando (when), un día (one day).
Practice
Mientras mis padres ___ (preparar) la cena, yo hacía la tarea.
"Mientras" with a second ongoing action calls for the imperfect.
"De repente" introduces a sudden completed event, so the preterite is used.
Oí is the preterite and marks the sudden event. Era, hacía and estaba are imperfect and describe the background.
