Spanish 3 / Unit 2: The Present Subjunctive with Wishes and Emotions
2.1 Forming the Present Subjunctive
Notes
The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense. It expresses wishes, emotions and doubts instead of facts. To form it, start with the yo form of the present, drop the -o, and add the "opposite" endings.
| Subject | -ar (hablar) | -er / -ir (comer, vivir) |
|---|---|---|
| yo | hable | coma / viva |
| tú | hables | comas / vivas |
| él / ella / usted | hable | coma / viva |
| nosotros | hablemos | comamos / vivamos |
| ellos / ustedes | hablen | coman / vivan |
- Irregular yo forms carry over: tengo → tenga, hago → haga, salgo → salga, conozco → conozca, digo → diga, pongo → ponga, vengo → venga.
- Spelling changes keep the sound: buscar → busque, llegar → llegue, empezar → empiece.
- Worked example: Quiero que tú hables con el director.
Practice
¿Cuál es la forma de "comer" en el subjuntivo para "ellos"?
For -er verbs the subjunctive uses -a endings: como → com- + an = coman.
Mi madre quiere que yo ___ (tener) más paciencia.
Yo tengo → drop -o → add -a: tenga.
Espero que ellos ___ (buscar) un buen restaurante.
Verbs ending in -car change c to qu before e: busquen.
