Spanish 3 / Unit 2: The Present Subjunctive with Wishes and Emotions
2.6 Putting It Together: Reading
Notes
Read short passages for the trigger (the main verb) and the que-clause verb. Ask: Are there two clauses? Two subjects? A wish, emotion or request?
- Lee: Querida Ana: Espero que estés bien. Mis padres quieren que yo estudie en España el año próximo. Me alegro de que tú puedas visitarme. Ojalá que nos veamos pronto.
- Triggers: espero que (hope), quieren que (wish), me alegro de que (emotion), ojalá que (hope).
- Each trigger is followed by a subjunctive form: estés, estudie, puedas, veamos.
- For comprehension, ask who feels or wants something and who performs the action in the que-clause.
Practice
Lee: "Mis padres quieren que yo estudie en España." ¿Quién va a estudiar en España?
The subject of the que-clause is yo, so the speaker will study there; the parents only want it.
Elige la forma correcta: "Ojalá que nosotros ___ el próximo mes."
Ojalá que requires the subjunctive; ver → veo → vea → veamos.
Lee: "Espero que estés bien. Me alegro de que puedas visitarme." ¿Qué sentimiento expresa el hablante?
Espero que shows hope and me alegro de que shows joy.
