Spanish 3 / Unit 3: The Subjunctive with Doubt and Impersonal Expressions
3.1 Impersonal Expressions with the Subjunctive
Notes
An impersonal expression has no real subject (it is "es + adjective"). When it gives an opinion, a judgment or an emotion about what someone else does, it is followed by que and the subjunctive.
- Common ones: es importante / necesario / mejor / bueno / malo / urgente / posible / probable / increíble / una lástima / difícil / fácil que.
- Es importante que hagamos ejercicio. (It is important that we exercise.)
- Es necesario que tú seas puntual.
- When there is no specific person, use the infinitive: Es importante hacer ejercicio. (in general)
- Expressions of certainty (es verdad, es cierto, es obvio, es evidente) take the indicative, not the subjunctive.
Practice
Es importante que nosotros ___ (estudiar) para el examen.
Es importante que + subjunctive. Nosotros of -ar verbs ends in -emos.
Es necesario que tú ___ (ser) puntual.
Ser has the irregular subjunctive seas.
Es mejor ___ temprano para evitar el tráfico. (salir)
There is no specific subject, so the infinitive follows es mejor.
