Notes
The past perfect says what had happened before another past moment. Use the imperfect of haber + the past participle.
| Subject | haber (imperfect) |
|---|---|
| yo | había |
| tú | habías |
| él / ella | había |
| nosotros | habíamos |
| ellos | habían |
- Cuando llegué, ellos ya habían salido. (They had already left when I arrived.)
- Nunca había comido paella antes de viajar a España.
- The action in the past perfect happened first; the other action is in the preterite or imperfect.
- Worked example: Ya habíamos cenado cuando sonó el teléfono.
