Spanish 3 / Unit 5: Perfect Tenses
5.4 The Present Perfect Subjunctive
Notes
Use the present subjunctive of haber + past participle when a subjunctive trigger refers to something that has already happened.
| Subject | haber (subjunctive) |
|---|---|
| yo | haya |
| tú | hayas |
| él / ella | haya |
| nosotros | hayamos |
| ellos | hayan |
- Espero que tú hayas llegado bien. (I hope you have arrived safely.)
- Me alegro de que ustedes hayan venido.
- No creo que él haya dicho la verdad.
- Es posible que ella haya perdido las llaves.
- It is used after the same triggers as the present subjunctive (WEIRDO) when the action in the que-clause is already completed.
Practice
Espero que tú ___ (llegar) bien a casa anoche.
Espero que needs the subjunctive, and the arrival is already completed: hayas llegado.
Me alegro de que ustedes ___ (venir) a mi fiesta.
Emotion trigger + completed action = present perfect subjunctive.
No creo que él ___ (decir) la verdad.
No creer que needs the subjunctive; decir has the irregular participle dicho.
