Spanish 3 / Unit 6: The Imperfect Subjunctive and Si Clauses
6.1 Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive
Notes
Start with the ellos form of the preterite, drop -ron, and add the endings below. This works for every verb, regular or irregular.
| Subject | Endings | hablar (hablaron) | tener (tuvieron) |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | -ra | hablara | tuviera |
| tú | -ras | hablaras | tuvieras |
| él / ella | -ra | hablara | tuviera |
| nosotros | -ramos | habláramos | tuviéramos |
| ellos | -ran | hablaran | tuvieran |
- The nosotros form always has a written accent on the vowel before -ramos: habláramos, comiéramos, fuéramos.
- Irregular examples: ser/ir → fuera (fueron), decir → dijera, hacer → hiciera, saber → supiera, poder → pudiera, pedir → pidiera, leer → leyera.
- There is also an alternate -se form (hablase, comiese) used mostly in writing; the -ra form is more common.
