Spanish 3 / Unit 6: The Imperfect Subjunctive and Si Clauses
6.2 When to Use the Imperfect Subjunctive
Notes
Use the imperfect subjunctive in the same situations as the present subjunctive (WEIRDO) when the main verb is in a past tense or the conditional.
| Main verb | Que-clause |
|---|---|
| Quiero que vengas. (present) | Quería que vinieras. (imperfect) |
| Es importante que estudies. | Era importante que estudiaras. |
| Dudo que ella lo sepa. | Dudaba que ella lo supiera. |
| Espero que ganen. | Esperaba que ganaran. |
- Mi madre pidió que yo limpiara mi cuarto. (My mother asked me to clean my room.)
- Me alegraba de que ellos vinieran. (I was glad they came.)
- The conditional main verb also pulls in the imperfect subjunctive: Me gustaría que vinieras.
- Worked example: Era necesario que todos llegaran a tiempo.
Practice
Mi madre quería que yo ___ (limpiar) mi cuarto.
The main verb quería is in the past, so the que-clause uses the imperfect subjunctive.
Era importante que todos ___ (llegar) a tiempo.
Era importante que is in the past, so the imperfect subjunctive is needed.
Dudaba que ella ___ (saber) la respuesta.
Dudaba (past) + que requires the imperfect subjunctive; saber → supieron → supiera.
