AP Biology / Unit 7: Natural Selection
7.5 Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium
Notes
$$p+q=1,\qquad p^2+2pq+q^2=1$$
Conditions: large population, random mating, no mutation, no migration, no selection.
- If the conditions hold, allele frequencies don't change.
Practice
$q^2=0.16$. Then $q=$
$\displaystyle \sqrt{0.16}$.
With $q=0.4$, the frequency of heterozygotes ($2pq$):
$2(0.6)(0.4)$.
Which breaks Hardy-Weinberg?
Selection changes allele frequencies.
