AP Precalculus / Unit 1: Polynomial and Rational Functions
1.14 Function Model Construction and Application
Notes
Build a model from data (often using regression on a calculator) or from context, then use it to predict, with units.
- Check the model against the data (residuals).
- Use the domain that makes sense in context.
Practice
A model for ticket sales is $T(p)=-20p+800$ ($p$ in dollars). Sales at $p=15$:
$-300+800$.
A reasonable domain for a model of a box's volume using side length $x$:
Lengths must be positive.
Residual = actual value minus:
It measures model error.
