AP Precalculus / Unit 3: Trigonometric and Polar Functions
3.11 The Secant, Cosecant, and Cotangent Functions
Notes
- $\displaystyle \sec\theta=\frac{1}{\cos\theta}$, $\displaystyle \csc\theta=\frac{1}{\sin\theta}$, $\displaystyle \cot\theta=\frac{1}{\tan\theta}$.
- Each has vertical asymptotes where its reciprocal is 0.
Practice
$\sec 0=$
$\displaystyle \frac{1}{\cos0}$.
$\csc x$ is undefined where:
Division by zero.
$\displaystyle \cot\frac{\pi}{4}=$
$\displaystyle \frac{1}{\tan\frac{\pi}{4}}$.
