English 12 / Unit 8: College and Career Writing
8.1 The Personal Narrative Essay
Notes
A personal essay tells a true story from your life and reflects on what it means.
- Show, don't tell: use specific details, sensory images and dialogue instead of general statements.
- Structure: a hook (a scene or moment), development of a turning point, and a reflection that explains what you learned or how you changed.
- Voice should sound like you: natural, honest, and not stuffed with big words.
- Example of telling: "I was nervous." Example of showing: "My palms left damp prints on the cue cards, and the first word came out as a whisper."
