English 12 / Unit 8: College and Career Writing
8.2 The College Application Essay
Notes
The college essay (for example, the Common Application essay) lets admissions officers hear your voice beyond grades.
- The Common App essay has a 650-word maximum (and a 250-word minimum).
- Choose a focused topic and go deep, rather than listing achievements. A small moment can say more than a big award.
- Show growth, values and reflection. Be specific and honest.
- Avoid clichés (the big game, a mission trip as a life-changing event) unless you bring a fresh angle. Avoid repeating your résumé.
- Revise multiple times and have a trusted reader check for clarity. Proofread carefully.
