French 1 / Unit 5: School and -er Verbs
5.3 Spelling Changes in -er Verbs
Notes
A few -er verbs change spelling in the nous form so that the sound stays the same.
- manger (eat) adds an e in nous: nous mangeons (keeps the soft g).
- commencer (begin) uses ç in nous: nous commençons (keeps the soft c).
- Other -ger verbs like manger: voyager → nous voyageons, partager → nous partageons. Other -cer verbs like commencer: placer → nous plaçons.
- All other forms are regular: je mange, tu manges, il mange, vous mangez, ils mangent.
- Most verbs ending in -ier (étudier) are regular: nous étudions, vous étudiez.
- Example: Nous commençons le cours à huit heures.
Practice
Complete: « Nous ___ à la cantine. » (manger)
Manger keeps the e in nous so the g stays soft: mangeons.
Complete: « Nous ___ l'examen demain. » (commencer)
The c needs a cédille before o to stay soft: commençons.
Complete: « Vous ___ beaucoup. » (voyager)
The vous form of a regular -er verb ends in -ez, with no spelling change.
