French 1 / Unit 5: School and -er Verbs
5.4 Negation with ne...pas
Notes
To make a sentence negative, put ne before the verb and pas after it.
- Je parle espagnol. → Je ne parle pas espagnol.
- Before a vowel or silent h, ne becomes n': Il n'aime pas les maths. Je n'habite pas ici.
- Only the verb is wrapped: Nous ne mangeons pas à la cantine.
- After a negative, un / une / des become de (d'): J'ai un stylo. → Je n'ai pas de stylo. But definite articles stay: Je n'aime pas le sport.
- In casual speech people drop ne, but in writing always use both parts.
- Answer: Non, je ne parle pas allemand.
