French 2 / Unit 3: The Passé Composé with Être
3.3 Avoir or Être?
Notes
Most verbs use avoir. Use être only for the DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs and for reflexive verbs.
- Some of these verbs take avoir when they have a direct object and change meaning:
| With être (no object) | With avoir (direct object) |
|---|---|
| Elle est montée. (She went up.) | Elle a monté les valises. (She carried up the suitcases.) |
| Je suis sorti. (I went out.) | J'ai sorti mon livre. (I took out my book.) |
| Il est descendu. (He went down.) | Il a descendu l'escalier. (He went down the stairs.) |
| Nous sommes rentrés. | Nous avons rentré le vélo. (We brought in the bike.) |
- Passer, retourner and rentrer follow the same pattern: Elle a passé un mois en France.
- Example: Hier, il est sorti à huit heures. Il a sorti le chien.
