French 2 / Unit 3: The Passé Composé with Être
3.4 Reflexive Verbs in the Passé Composé
Notes
All reflexive verbs form the passé composé with être. The reflexive pronoun goes before être.
- Structure: subject + reflexive pronoun + être + participle. Je me suis levé(e). Tu t'es couché(e). Il s'est réveillé. Nous nous sommes dépêchés.
- The participle agrees with the reflexive pronoun (the subject) when the pronoun is the direct object: Elle s'est levée.
- If a direct object follows (such as a body part), there is no agreement: Elle s'est lavé les mains. (but: Elle s'est lavée.)
- Example: Ils se sont brossé les dents.
