Notes

Which verbs use être

  • Use être with the DR MRS VANDERTRAMP verbs: devenir (devenu), revenir (revenu), monter (monté), rester (resté), sortir (sorti), venir (venu), aller (allé), naître (né), descendre (descendu), entrer (entré), retourner (retourné), tomber (tombé), rentrer (rentré), arriver (arrivé), mourir (mort), partir (parti).
  • Most other verbs use avoir. Monter, sortir, descendre, rentrer and retourner take avoir when they have a direct object: J'ai sorti le chien. Je suis sorti.

Agreement

  • With être, the participle agrees with the subject: add e (feminine), s (plural), es (feminine plural). Elle est partie. Ils sont partis. Elles sont parties.
  • A mixed group is masculine plural: Marc et Anne sont arrivés.
  • With avoir, there is no agreement with the subject.

Reflexive verbs in the past

  • All reflexive verbs use être, with the pronoun before the auxiliary: Elle s'est levée. Nous nous sommes couchés.
  • If a direct object follows, no agreement: Elle s'est lavé les mains.
  • Negation: Je ne suis pas parti. Elle ne s'est pas réveillée. Ils ne sont jamais revenus.
