The present subjunctive
- The subjunctive is a mood used for wishes, recommendations, doubts and feelings. It appears after que when the two clauses have different subjects: Quiero que vengas. With one subject use an infinitive: Quiero venir.
- Formation: yo form, drop -o, add the opposite ending. -ar: e, es, e, emos, en. -er / -ir: a, as, a, amos, an.
- Irregular: dé, esté, vaya, sepa, sea. Spelling changes: busque, pague, empiece. Irregular yo forms carry over: tenga, haga, salga.
Wishes and recommendations
- Verbs: querer que, desear que, esperar que, pedir que, recomendar que, sugerir que, aconsejar que, preferir que, prohibir que. Also Es importante / necesario / mejor que...
Culture
- Spanish is official in Spain, Mexico, most of Central and South America, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Vocabulary and pronouns vary (carro / coche, vosotros / ustedes, vos).
- Celebrations: Día de los Muertos (Mexico, Nov. 1-2), La Tomatina (Buñol, Spain), San Fermín (Pamplona), Las Fallas (Valencia), Inti Raymi (Peru), quinceañera, Día de los Reyes Magos (Jan. 6).
